Start a conversation
For anyone sending the first message in a new conversation. When there's nothing to answer yet, Riff writes the opener.
- Start a new message: New message on LinkedIn, a new chat on Facebook, or a new message on Instagram. Pick the person and click into the empty message box.
- The panel switches to post with the note New conversation, tagged New LinkedIn DM (New Messenger chat on Facebook, New IG DM on Instagram). The canvas reads A first message to Ana, with their name.
- Say who it's for and why you're writing. The box asks Who is it to, and why are you writing? Rough notes are fine., so something like "met at the meetup last week, want to compare notes on checkout tests" is enough.
- Set purpose and relationship if you like Purpose, relationship and first-message reworks, press Enter, then ask for changes in plain words, as with posts Talk to the canvas.
- Click Insert into message box, read it and press Send or Enter yourself.
First messages are short and personal, with one clear ask, and use the person's name and headline when the page shows them. Riff never pretends you know each other when you don't. Limits are 8,000 characters on LinkedIn, 20,000 on Facebook and 1,000 on Instagram. Once they answer, clicking into the chat gets you the usual reply Answer a LinkedIn message.
